I'd have to disagree with you on your assessment of Van Gogh... While his colours are bright, there's often a certain seething, acid quality to them--they're not quite right, not quite real, not quite comfortable. Not to mention his perspective, which is often designed to give the viewer the impression of sliding backwards, or being crammed into the closest corner of the canvas. He's made some very claustrophobic paintings. It's probably too easy to say that these details are simply reflections of his inner life, but, the paintings are certainly some kind of complex meeting of turmoil and beauty.
